  • Mikel Arteta wants answers after Arsenal were denied 2 crucial points in a frustrating 1-1 draw against Brentford
  • Ivan Toney equalized in the 74th minute to cancel out Leandro Trossard’s first goal for his new team
  • Arteta however maintains there were two offside incidents in the build up to the goal
  • The Gunners could lose their summit status if Manchester City win their next 2 Premier League games

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has blatantly accused the referees of changing the rules in his reaction to Brentford’s equalizer at the Emirates on Saturday, February 11.

The Gunners had initially taken the lead after Leandro Trossard scored his first goal for the club, but they were pegged back a couple of minutes later through Ivan Toney.

Toney’s header from a set piece was subject to a lengthy review from VAR Lee Mason, who eventually allowed the goal to stand.

Replays appeared to show Ethan Pinnock, Brentford’s centre back in an offside position as he was blocking Arsenal’s Gabriel when a free kick was floated into the Arsenal penalty area.

Speaking after the game, Arteta claimed he watched the footage back and it looked like a clear offside.

"I just looked back and it is offside, yes," said Arteta as quoted on BBC.
"The action when you get blocked when you are offside - you cannot block if you are offside,"
"It's too late, the goal was allowed, we dropped two points."

Brentford boss Thomas Frank however saw the incident differently as he believes it was a case of ‘fine margins’.

"Every week there are VAR decisions that are going marginally one way or the other," he said. "I agree that when they kick the ball Ethan is in an offside position. As far as I know the football law, the next question is, did he influence that we could cross the ball across? They decided it was not enough, I agree!" He said.

Rival fans say same thing about Arsenal

Sports Brief also reported on rival fans’ assessment of Arsenal after the draw against Brentford.

Arsenal have had a history of going through a rut in February, and their latest draw against the Bees meant they are yet to win a game so far this month.

This stat is music to rival fans’ ears, as many fans are anticipating Manchester City will topple Mikel Arteta’s side off the top of the table when the two sides meet on Wednesday, February 15.
