Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas has taken a swipe at Gerard Pique over Chelsea's infamous Champions League semifinal game against Barcelona in 2009.

Referee Tom Ovrebo rejected several penalty calls for the Blues as the Catalan giants eventually won the tie over two legs, advancing to the final.

The fixture which ended 1-1 ensured that Barcelona qualified on away goal rule after the first leg ended 0-0 at Camp Nou.

Casillas, Pique's friend and teammate with the Spanish national team, couldn’t help poking fun at the ex-Barcelona defender in reports carried by Marca.

The duo, who were special guests on the Kings League matchday 6 preview show, clashed when talking about controversial refereeing decisions that, in the past, benefited Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Pique, president of the Kings League, recalled a penalty once given to Real Madrid in a La Liga game against Elche back in 2013.

"This is one of the most historic of Madrid's embarrassments, one of them," Pique joked.

Casillas was not at all amused by this statement and hit back at Pique by referring to Tom Ovrebo's controversial refereeing at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League semi-finals in 2009.

"Disgrace was you against Chelsea, my friend," he responded.

What ensued between Chelsea and Barcelona in 2009?

After the Chelsea secured a goalless draw in the first leg, they knew any form of a win would see them secure back-to-back Champions League finals, but it never materialized.

Ghana's Michael Essien scored an out-of-this-world volley to put Chelsea in the lead with no further goals added and the game drawing to a close, Barcelona cranked up the pressure.

But in between that period, Chelsea made serious incursions, especially in the box of Barcelona where Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba all had genuine penalty calls ignored.

Further handballs by Pique and Samuel Eto'o were all waived by Tom Ovrebo and then Iniesta pulled the chestnut out of the blazing fire when his last-gasp goal sent Barcelona to the finals on away goal rule.

Ovrebo admits mistakes

Tom Henning Ovrebo has admitted Chelsea deserved a penalty in their UEFA Champions League semifinal against FC Barcelona in 2009, Sports Brief had earlier reported.

Assessing his performance in one of the most keenly contested semifinal clashes, the retired Norwegian referee admits in hindsight he should have heeded at least one of the many calls for a penalty by Chelsea.

Unfortunately, the Norwegian official waived away all of Chelsea's penalty appeals much to the dismay of the enraged supporters gathered at Stamford Bridge on the fateful day.
