FootballLisandro Martinez: Manchester United Star Calls Wout Weghorst Nickname Inspired by Lionel Messi
- Lisandro Martinez has christened Wout Weghorst a nickname that Lionel Messi used to insult him
- Messi and Weghorst had an infamous clash during the quarterfinals of the 2022 Qatar World Cup
- Martinez and Weghorst are now teammates after the striker joined Manchester United this year
Football is one game where the players easily become enemies before becoming friends the next minute. Just like in politics, there are no permanent enemies in football.
Take for example Lionel Messi's wild celebration against the Netherlands after Argentina had sealed qualification to the World Cup semifinals last year.
Messi always cuts the figure of a player who is always humble. Does his wonders on the pitch, talks less and goes away. But that game tested his resolve and he reacted to it by cupping his ears and staring right down at the Dutch technical area.
Messi's apology
Later on, he confronted Louis Van Gaal before chasing Wout Weghorst during a press conference. Sports Brief has since reported that he expressed remorse about his uncharacteristically rude behaviour toward the Dutch national team at the 2022 World Cup.

Argentina qualified ahead of the Netherlands in a tempestuous quarterfinal clash which saw a record 18 yellow cards and one red dished out.
Martinez and Weghorst
Lisandro Martinez, Messi's national teammate, was part of the game at Lusail Stadium. Weghorst joined Manchester United this year and the two enemies in Qatar have since become friends and teammates fighting for the same goals in England.
Even funnier, Martinez has christened Weghorst the same name Messi called him during their fiery encounter in Qatar. Messi called the Dutch forward 'Bobo' which means idiot.
Lloris faces up to seven weeks out, says Spurs coach
FootballTalksport reports that Weghorst has not taken offence to name and has accepted it as he continues to settle into Erik ten Hag's side. He was signed on a short-term loan from Burnley.
Martinez reveals favourite defensive partner
Sports Brief had earlier reported that Martinez strongly hinted he preferred a defensive partnership with Victor Lindelof, in the absence of Raphael Varane.
These latest comments will come as a blow to Englishman Harry Maguire, who has pretty much lost his place in United’s starting XI.
Martinez collaborated with Lindelof in the heart of United’s defence on Wednesday for the EFL Cup semi final first leg against Nottingham Forest.
