Mason Greenwood has a small lifeline in his football career after charges against him were dropped on Thursday, February 2.

The 21-year old was initially arrested in January 2022 in explosive allegations which were backed by images and audio that went viral on social media.

Offences allegedly commited by Greenwood are said to have taken place between November 1, 2018, and October 15, 2022, and the striker was accused of controlling and coercive behaviour for almost four years, as per The Sun.

But after nearly a year, the case was stopped after the withdrawal of a key witness and ‘new material coming to light’.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service maintains the case is under continuous review.

Where does that leave Greenwood and Manchester United?

Sports Brief did a spot check and established that Greenwood was still suspended by his parent club Manchester United.

However, the club still considers him as one of their players, if their official website is anything to go by.

At the start of the 2022/23 campaign, Greenwood was listed among the under-21 players, and months later, he is still listed in the club’s website.

Hours after the charges were dropped, United released a statement on Greenwood that read:

“Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.”
“The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

Greenwood breaks silence

Mason Greenwood also broke his silence after his release, saying he was relieved charges against him were dropped, as earlier reported on Sports Brief.

In a short statement released on his behalf, the 21-year-old said via The Sun:

"I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.
"There will be no further comment at this time," he added.
