Manchester United star Mason Greenwood has broken his silence after assault charges against him were dropped.

Greenwood had faced three allegations ranging from controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault, all involving the same woman believed to have been his partner.

According to Sky Sports, a probe into the allegations was initiated a little over a year ago and a trial date had been set for later this year.

However, the case will now not be proceeding as earlier anticipated after the charges were dropped on Thursday, February 2.

A police statement cited by the BBC said that there was "no longer a realistic prospect of conviction."

Greenwood breaks his silence

The Man United ace has since broken his silence after the latest development, admitting that he was 'relieved.'

In a short statement released on his behalf, the 21-year-old said via The Sun:

"I am relieved that this matter is now over, and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.
"There will be no further comment at this time," he added.

On their part, Man United announced that they have initiated their own internal probe into the matter to ascertain the next cause of action.

Mendy cleared of assault charges

Sports Brief earlier reported that Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was cleared of assault charges over a year after he was suspended at Manchester City.

The France international was cleared of six charges while he will face retrial over two other charges which could not be clarified.

The Citizens suspended the 2018 World Cup winner and stopped paying his salaries subsequently, even though he maintains his innocence.
