Ghana Legend Asamoah Gyan Reveals Critics Made Him a Strong Person

Former Ghana captain, Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he developed a tough skin following criticism during his first AFCON appearance with the Black Stars.

He received his first invite for the Nations Cup in 2008, but the striker was heavily criticised for wasting several chances in the opening game against Namibia.

Gyan nearly left camp as a result, but was convinced by his brother, Baffour to stay as the Black Stars went on to finish third at the tournament hosted in Ghana.

“It made me a strong guy. All my life, I was pampered and that was how I developed that tough skin,” he said on The Day Show on TV3, as quoted by Pulse.

“Statistically, we were ahead. Ghanaians thought we were going to beat them [Namibia] like 20-0. And it was one of those days. I wasn’t lucky. I think I was one of the best players on the field, but I wasn’t lucky."

Gyan explained one opportunity came his way, but at a very narrow angle. Although the goalkeeper fumbled the ball and was off the line, the striker somehow struck the shot wide.

“And the following day… eii! That was the first time I experienced criticism. So they were just insulting. It was really bad.”

After almost two decades with the national team, Gyan holds the record as Ghana's top scorer with 51 goals from 109 matches.

The Ghanaian football legend, who is yet to retire from the sport, has quite a number of cars in the garage of his mansion in Kasoa, Ghana.

In his latest post on Instagram, Gyan is seen disembarking from his gold-coloured vehicle, which costs in the region of 400,000 Dollars.

Ghana legend, Gyan says he still misses his musician friend Castro, who disappeared in 2014 while they were holidaying at the Ada Estuary.

The footballer and the artist were close friends and even composed songs together, including the hit record African Girls.

However, on July 6 eight years ago, Castro drowned following a jet skiing accident in Ghana, as Sports Brief reported.
