FootballAleksandar Mitrovic: Fulham Star Has Penalty Ruled out After Bizarrely Kicking Ball with Both Feet
- Aleksandar Mitrovic thought he had given Fulham the lead from the penalty spot
- But his penalty against Newcastle was ruled out because of the rare double touch
- The rulebook states that a penalty should only be subjected to one touch of the ball
There were rare scenes at St James’ Park on Sunday, January 15, during the Newcastle vs Fulham clash, as Aleksandar Mitrovic’s goal was painfully ruled out due to a rare double touch inside the area.
Fulham have been the impressive Premier League newcomers this season, and went into the game knowing a win would take them above Tottenham Hotspur - at least temporarily.
Marco Silva’s men were pretty impressive in keeping a resurgent Newcastle in check in the first half, and they got the chance to take the lead when Kieran Trippier brought down Bobby Decordova-Reid in the penalty area.
Up stepped Fulham’s top marksman Mitrovic, who went on to send Nick Pope the wrong way.

Lilywhites players wheeled away in celebration but their joy was short-lived, as the goal was disallowed because the Serbian was adjudged to have hit the ball twice from the spot.
Replays showed that Mitrovic had indeed booted the goal into his ankle, meaning the ball was played via both his feet for the goal.
As per the IFAB rule: 'The kicker must not play the ball again until it has touched another player'.
A visibly frustrated Mitrovic had no choice but to accept his gaffe, as the home crowd celebrated in relief.
Newcastle takes late win
Mitrovic’s mistake in his penalty would go on to prove costly, as Newcastle somehow found a winner late in the game through their record signing, Alexander Isak, who tapped home from close range.

Mudryk unveiled at Chelsea
Sports Brief also reported on Chelsea unveiling Mykhaylo Mudryk at Stamford Bridge during half-time on Sunday.
The Blues announced they have reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of winger, thereby ending Arsenal’s pursuit.
The transfer is reportedly worth £88-million and he will sign an eight-and-half year contract, which is becoming a new trend under the new ownership to help with UEFA FFP regulations.
