FootballFormer Italy Defender Explains Why Victor Osimhen Should Take Penalties for Napoli
- Victor Osimhen has been impressive for Napoli, but the Nigerian is not taking penalties
- Ex-Italy defender Maurizio Domizzi urged the club to let the striker shoot from the spot
- While Osimhen scored in the 2-0 win over Sampdoria, he did not make penalty attempts
Former Italian international, Maurizio Domizzi has advised Serie A leaders Napoli to allow Victor Osimhen to take penalties going forward.
The Super Eagles striker was yet again on the scoresheet, netting their opening goal in the 2-0 win over Sampdoria at the weekend.
Napoli were gifted two penalties in both halves of the encounter and while Matteo Politano missed his spot kick in the first half, Elif Elmas scored his to seal victory in the second half.
But speaking on Radio Ponto Nuovo via Tuttonapoli.net, Domizzi was stunned that the 24-year-old Nigerian striker did not take any of the penalties.

He said, translated as per Complete Sports:
“The penalty taker issue? It’s a bit strange that someone like Osimhen doesn’t take penalties. He’s the leading striker and the most prolific. Evidently either he or whoever on the staff will have decided differently.
Domizzi said a penalty taker was usually decided by the team and not the coach, and that decision generally came down to who they felt was worthy of the spot kick honours.
“It’s more a question of character and personality, not just technique.”
Former Lille of France striker, Osimhen has made 13 Serie A appearances this season, scoring 10 goals and two assists. Napoli currently top the Serie A standings with 44 points from 17 games.
Osimhen has also scored 15 goals in 23 appearances for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

FootballOsimhen equals George Weah’s record
Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigerian international, Osimhen equalled the goal record set by Liberian legend, George Weah in the Italian Serie A.
The Super Eagles striker was in action and scored as Napoli beat Sampdoria 2-0, to extend their lead in the league standings to seven.
Osimhen’s goal means the 24-year-old becomes the second African player to score 10-plus goals in three different Serie A seasons, after Weah with AC Milan in 1995/96, 1996/97 and 1997/98.
