  • Hugo Lloris has aimed a subtle jab at Argentina's Emiliano Martinez
  • Martinez had the last laugh despite his antics as Argentina sealed a third World Cup at the expense of France on penalties
  • Lloris has failed to stop any of the last nine shoot-out attempts he has faced with France, including the World Cup final

Retired French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has admitted he does not see himself resorting to boisterous antics like Emiliano Martinez during penalty shootouts.

Lloris came under some intense backlash for failing to make a save during France's 4-2 loss to Argentina during post-match penalties in the 2022 World Cup final.

While the Tottenham Hotspur custodian remained calm in between the sticks, his opposite number, Emiliano Martinez resorted to various antics to destabilize the French players.

Reflecting on the World Cup final, which has been described as the greatest-ever in the competition's history, the 36-year-old shot-stopper said:

“There are some things I can’t do,” says Lloris. “Making a fool of myself in goal, rattling my opponent and crossing the line… I just can’t do that," Lloris told L'Equipe via GFFN.
"I’m too rational and honest a man to go that way. I don’t know how to win like that, although I didn’t really want to lose like that either.“

Hugo Lloris retires

Following Gareth Bale’s announcement that he was retiring from all forms of football, another great of the game is calling it quits on his international career.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris made the decision on the same day that Bale retired and German stalwart Thomas Muller announced that he wouldn’t be retiring.

As noted by Goal, Lloris called an end to his international career after more than 14 years with the French national team. He will still play club football for Spurs in the English Premier League.

Martinez's antics lands him in trouble

Sports Brief earlier reported that Argentina and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has gone from a World Cup hero to a controversial figure in only a matter of days.

It all has to do with his recent antics, which have been thoroughly criticized across the football world.

On Sunday, December 18, Martinez was among the heroes for his country as he helped them pull off a World Cup triumph for the first time since 1986.
