As it is on every January 1, a new year comes with a new and clean slate, and with lots of expectations from every human on earth.

The year 2023 is no different for Nigerian football fans, who are now looking forward to the big soccer activities that will occur.

The disappointment of not playing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is still fresh in the minds of many Nigerian football lovers, who wanted to see Super Eagles feature at the global tournament.

How Nigeria missed the ticket

Nigeria missed the chance to play at the 2022 World Cup after losing the play-offs to Ghana. They forced the Black Stars to goalless draw in Kumasi, before playing 1-1 in Abuja.

Ghana qualified on the away goals rule.

Five competitions Nigerians are anticipating

1. The Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL)

Nigerian football fans have been waiting for the start of the 2023 league season, with Rivers United the reigning champions.

The NPFL has confirmed the fixtures and games will start on January 8, and end on May 14.

2. The 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations

Nigeria will head to Egypt in February with the mindset of not just winning the U-20 AFCON, but also qualifying for the U-20 World Cup later in the year.

They are drawn in Group A with hosts Egypt, plus Mozambique and Senegal.

3. AFCON 2023 Qualifiers

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will resume their qualification quest for the 2023 AFCON in March, with a double-header against Guinea-Bissau.

After wins over Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe, Nigeria are currently topping Group A with six points.

4. 2023 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations

The competition will run from April 8 to 30 in Algeria, and will also serve as qualification for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, according to the report on Pulse.

5. 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will be making their ninth trip to the women's World Cup this year, which is scheduled to be held in New Zealand.

Nigeria fans will be hoping the Falcons can win the coveted title this time around.

Napoli prepares contract for Osimhen

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Italian giants Napoli preparing to offer a contract extension to Victor Osimhen, who continues to shine in Naples.

Several clubs are trailing the Super Eagles forward ahead of the January transfer window, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Bayern Munich.

However, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis wants Osimhen to stay and the club is reportedly working on the renewal of the Nigerian international's contract.
