  • Angel Di Maria sent text messages to his wife promising her that he will be crowned world champion in Qatar
  • Di Maria went off to put on a star performance in the first hour of the game which was eventually decided by penalties
  • Argentina was forced to work for it as a Kylian Mbappe hat-trick forced the game to overtime and penalties

New messages believed to be from Angel Di Maria's to his wife Jorgelina Cardoso before the World Cup final have revealed how the winger was convinced Argentina was going to win.

Di Maria made a timely return to Argentina's starting eleven against France in the final and was the man of the match in the first half by winning a penalty converted by Lionel Messi and scoring the second goal.

Lionel Scaloni's game plan fell through when he hooked off the Juventus winger in the 64th minute with Kylian Mbappe scoring a quickfire double to force the game to extra time. The Albiceleste held on to win on post-match penalties.

But despite the nervy and tense moments, Di Maria had a premonition that this was their year after previous heartbreaks. He was even sure that he would score a goal in the final.

In the series of WhatsApp messages, he said:

"I will be a world champion, my love. It’s written. I will score a goal. Because it’s written like Maracana and Wembley. Go and enjoy tomorrow because we are going to be world champions. Because the 26 of us here and the families deserve it," as translated by Sport Bible.

True to his word, both predictions came true. He married Cardoso in 2011 and they are blessed with two daughters.

Lionel Messi's red ribbon

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Lionel Messi has a very interesting relationship with a red ribbon that he often wears in games or gives out to his teammates.

The ribbon was spotted as he celebrated his latest success, and perhaps the biggest of them all, in Argentina's dressing room after winning the World Cup on December 18th.

The ribbon was on Messi's right ankle and as GMS reports, TV journalist Rama Pantarotto gave it to him four years ago in Russia. The journalist hilariously explained that his mother loved Messi more than he loved him. He went on to tell Messi that his mother had given him the red ribbon as a sign of good luck and asked Messi if he would love to take it.
