  • Didier Deschamps stated he had to move quickly in order to prevent France from going farther behind in the first half of the World Cup final against Argentina
  • Deschamps subbed off Oliver Giroud alongside Ousmane Dembele after France conceded two goals in the first half against Argentina
  • France would fight their way back into the game, forcing extra time with substitutes Thuram and Muani both backing up the efforts of Kylian Mbappe

Oliver Giroud’s substitution in the final of the FIFA World Cup against Argentina has been one of the most talked about topics after France failed to retain their title.

With France 2-0 down in the first half against Argentina, Didier Deschamps looked to his bench for solutions as he quickly subbed off struggling Oliver Giroud and Ousmane Dembele.

The French manager has now opened up on the rationale behind his substitutions, revealing he needed to act quickly to avoid France conceding a third goal, Daily Mirror reports.

“If I made those changes so early, it’s because I was not satisfied and I felt convinced we could do better. That doesn’t mean the players who went off were more guilty than the others.”

France would later bounce back in the second half to level the score with Kylian Mbappe netting both goals to force extra time. However, even with an added goal each in the extra time, Les Blues would eventually lose via penalties to Argentina.

Deschamps questions France's World Cup final attitude

Meanwhile, France coach Didier Deschamps gave a scathing assessment of his side's first half performance in the World Cup final following their loss to Argentina, Goal reports.

Deschamps said in his postgame speech that France totally failed to show up in the first half, giving a brutally honest assessment of his team's performance.

The France manager lamented that his team neither had the correct attitude nor the correct response after they were outplayed and overwhelmed by Argentina in the first half.

French media tear into Dembele and Giroud

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Ousmane Dembele and Oliver Giroud have not been spared by French Media outfit L’Equipe, following France’s World Cup final loss to Argentina.

Dembele conceded a penalty against Argentina while Giroud barely had a touch of the ball before both players were substituted in the first half after France had gone 2-0 down.

Both Dembele and Giroud were not given a score in L’Equipe’s post-match player ratings, as they decided the two players were not worthy of that consideration.
