Despite Mbappe's best efforts, Argentina's goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez came up supreme in the shootouts, saving from Kingsley Coman with Aurelien Tchoumaneni missing another.

Les Blues appeared done and out in the first half courtesy of goals from Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria, only for Mbappe to turn the game on its head with a quickfire brace in the 80th minute.

Messi thought he had won the game for his side in the second half of extra time, only for Mbappe to step up again and equalise from the penalty spot and bag his hat-trick.

The striker has since taken to his social media accounts with a defiant message of 'we will return.' At only 23 years of age, he is expected to play in a couple more World Cups in future.

However, he did bag the Golden Boot after he finished with eight goals, one better than his PSG teammate Messi.

Mbappe inconsolable after final defeat

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Mbappe was an emotional picture, as he sat alone shortly after the 2022 World Cup final at the Lusail Stadium.

France were unable to see off a clinical Argentina side during the final of the global football showpiece on Sunday, December 18, as Les Bleus failed to successfully defend the crown.

The match had to be decided via an epic penalty shootout, after it had ended in a 3-3 thrilling draw after the extra time.

France President consoled Mbappe

In a photo posted on social media seen by Sports Brief, a devastated Mbappe was consoled by French President Emmanuel Macron, who held the PSG frontman in his arms.

Mbappe and president Macron have a close-knit relationship, with the latter playing a vital role in his PSG contract extension.

The young striker was the epitome of devastation after France were beaten at the final hurdle, as Argentina instead claimed the world title.
