Former US President Barack Obama joined millions of football fans from around the world, in giving their opinion about the raging GOAT debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi is considered by many to have settled the debate, after leading Argentina to their first World Cup triumph since 1986 in Qatar on Sunday night, December 18.

For Ronaldo, his 2022 World Cup with Portugal ended prematurely after they were eliminated in the quarter-final stage by Morocco.

The veteran striker was reduced to tears after the final whistle, an ominous sign that the tournament in Qatar could be his last.

Meanwhile, Messi's Argentina suffered a historic defeat in their first game against Saudi Arabia, but their remarkable recovery saw them reach the final, per Reuters.

Obama on Messi's achievement

The 44th American President had to weigh in on the debate shortly after La Albiceleste's win was confirmed, following a gripping encounter.

Obama took to Twitter to congratulate the South Americans, and to also declare Messi the GOAT.

"Congrats to Argentina and to the GOAT, Lionel Messi, for an amazing World Cup victory."

Messi and Argentina were on course to win the match, before France's golden boy Kylian Mbappe struck twice in quick succession to take the match to extra time.

The 35-year-old put Argentina 3-2 up but Mbappe answered back with a penalty, although Les Bleus fell short in the penalty shootout as La Albiceleste won 4-2, per Sky Sports.

Personalities from different walks of life then declared Messi as the best player of all time.

Is the GOAT debate over?

Sports Brief earlier reported on football stars declaring the GOAT debate is over, after Messi and Argentina sealed an incredible 2022 FIFA World Cup win.

After the South Americans' triumph, a number of footballers took to social media to offer their thoughts on the Messi versus Ronaldo debate.

The likes of Tammy Abraham, Declan Rice and James Maddison have all given their thoughts and announced Messi the best of all time.
