On social media, Rooney decided to prove to fans that he never changed his stance on the so-called ‘GOAT’, as he retweeted his own post from 2012.

In 2012, he tweeted:

"Messi is a joke. For me the best ever” and on Wednesday, he shared the same message with the caption: “Nothing has changed."

Rooney, Manchester United’s all-time top goal scorer, has experienced Messi’s brilliance firsthand, as he was part of the team that was destroyed by Barcelona in the Champions League final of 2011, when the Catalan giants won 3-1.

At the time, Rooney scored an equaliser for United, but Messi and his wards completely blew away Sir Alex Ferguson’s side for Pep Guardiola’s second UCL title in three years.
