According to ESPN, the Kenyan was rushed to the nearest hospital's intensive care unit after being attended to by emergency services, but later succumbed to his injuries. He was 24 years old.

A statement from the committee read:

"We regret to announce that, despite the efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away in hospital on Tuesday Dec. 13, after being in the intensive care unit for three days. His next of kin have been informed."

The committee extended its condolences to Kibue's family, friends and colleagues.

"We will also ensure that his family receive all outstanding dues and monies owed."

This incident came just days after the government launched an inquiry into the death of a Filipino worker at a training facility.

Adding to the pall of workers who died in the construction of World Cup facilities, journalists Khalid al-Misslam, Roger Pearce and Grant Wahl all passed away as the controversial tournament unfolded.

US reporter dies in Qatar

One of America's leading soccer reporters, who made headlines when he was detained at the Qatar World Cup for wearing a rainbow shirt, died on Friday while covering the quarter-finals in Doha, according to his wife and the US Soccer Federation.

48-year-old Grant Wahl helped build soccer's popularity in America through decades of vivid reporting at Sports Illustrated, then with CBS Sports.

Wahl collapsed in the press tribune - apparently due to a heart attack - as Friday's Argentina versus the Netherlands quarter-final match was winding down. Paramedics performed CPR at the scene before taking him away on a stretcher.
