  • Chelsea are short in the strikers' department after Armando Broja was reportedly ruled out
  • Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is the only senior striker in a team which need definite depth
  • The likes of Marcus Thuram and Cristiano Ronaldo are possible replacement candidates

Chelsea were dealt a massive blow when Armando Broja suffered a serious injury, during the Blues' warm-up game against Aston Villa.

The 20-year-old is expected to miss the remainder of the season after it was revealed he needs surgery to repair a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee, according to multiple reports.

Against Villa, Broja collided with defender Ezri Konsa, with the young striker coming off worse. After being tended to by the medical staff, he was stretchered off.

With Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang the only recognisable senior striker in the team, Chelsea are expected to go into the market to buy a goal-getter.

Chelsea strikers have struggled for goals this season, coinciding with their loss of form under Graham Potter, but who are the likely targets for Todd Boehly?

Here are 5 strikers they could sign in January, per Football.London.

1. Marcus Thuram

The 25-year-old is reportedly a target for some Premier League sides. The Frenchman has experience at the top level with Borussia Monchengladbach. He has the physical attributes to succeed in English football and would be a valuable addition. Thuram has scored 13 goals in 17 appearances this season, per Transfermarkt.

2. Joao Felix

The Portugal and Atletico Madrid star has been the subject of intense speculation, after reports emerged he was unhappy in Madrid. After impressing at the World Cup in Qatar, Boehly may consider going for the young forward, per SI.

3. Christopher Nkunku

The RB Leipzig striker was heavily linked with the Blues in the summer, but a deal never materialised. He signed a two-year contract extension in June but his release clause is believed to be €60 million, meaning he could leave for less.

4. Goncalo Ramos

Ramos burst onto the scene at Benfica, and announced his arrival on the world stage with a hat-trick against Switzerland in the round of 16, per Eurosport. Boehly may have to be bold to prize him away in January, as he is enjoying life in Portugal at the moment.

6. Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo is an outside candidate due to his highly-publicised fallout with Manchester United. With his huge wage demands and his physical decline, Potter may be forced to look elsewhere. Since the Blues' boss prefers a mobile and energetic striker, the veteran striker doesn't offer that.

Broja ruled out

Sports Brief earlier reported on Broja being ruled out for the rest of the season, after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee.

As reported by football insider Fabrizio Romano, Broja is out for the remainder of the season, as he requires surgery.

He will thus have to embark on a recovery process and hope to be good to go at the start of the 2023/24 season.
