Fact Checked: Video of President Magufuli calling out Tanzania after Senegal defeat in AFCON misleading
- A video of Magufuli allegedly slamming Taifa Stars for their 2-0 defeat to Senegal in AFCON 2019 has been shared widely on social media
- Magufuli was actually referring to a match before AFCON 2019 started and was not speaking on Monday, June 24
- The match in question was Tanzania's AFCON qualifier against Lesotho that Taifa Stars lost 1-0
- Senegal has a population of 15.8 million while Lesotho has a population of about 2 million that Magufuli refers to in the clip
Africa Cup of Nations 2019 is well into day five of action and apart from Uganda the rest of East Africa has faced defeat in their opening games.
Tanzania were thrashed by Senegal 2-0 in a game that could have easily seen the score-line expand as the Lions of Teranga toyed with the East African nation.

In a video that recently did rounds on social media and was even published by some media houses, Tanzania President, John Magufuli, furiously questioned why Taifa Stars lost.
In his opinion, Magufuli, felt his country's opponents were inferior owing to their lower population, claiming they were facing a country who had a population of two million.
Social media users claimed he was referring to the Senegal-Tanzania game.
The clip posted on an unknown date raised suspicion over its authenticity and as suspected, the video was actually an old clip of Magufuli addressing the team before AFCON 2019 even began.

The clip can be found in the above video published on Youtube on March 25, between the 10th and 12th minute.
Tanzania lost 1-0 to Lesotho in their AFCON qualifier and Magufuli in the video was referring to team with a population of 2 million — which is Lesotho.
In the clip, the Tanzanian leadr asked how they lost to a country with a population of two million people as compared to Tanzania's 57 million.
According to some, the video was supposedly referring to the recent AFCON performance, with some media houses even pointing out how mistaken the Tanzanian president was on Senegal's population.
World Bank places Senegal's population at 15.85 million and it is clearly not the country Magufuli was speaking of in the video.
"A country like Tanzania with a population of over 55 million is beaten by a team, with a population of two million?
"We must ask ourselves, that among 55 million we cannot find 11 players that can represent us in this important game that is loved by the world," Magufuli asked in the video.
Magufuli never shies away from expressing his opinion when it comes to matters of national interest and the video has been craftily made to look recent.
The video is misleading and inaccurate in suggesting his comments are to Taifa Stars' recent 2-0 defeat to Senegal.
