Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo has given Manchester United a compelling transfer signal, following a failed move this past winder.

Gakpo is on top form for the Dutch at the 2022 World Cup. His three goals have seen interest for the 23-year-old PSV Eindhoven star skyrocket.

Gakpo is enjoying an impressive run of form for his club both domestically and in Europe. He's scored 13 goals for them this season while also providing an astonishing 17 assists in 24 games, according to Transfermarkt.

United were interested in Gakpo in the summer transfer window, but ended up signing Antony for Ajax for £86 million. The forward admitted that he was close to joining the Red Devils, but the move never materialised, according to the Athletic.

Gakpo on Man United interest

The Dutch star, who is having an excellent World Cup, revealed other Premier League clubs were close to signing him before he decided to stay at PSV.

He added that if Erik ten Hag comes calling again, he will consider it, Goal reported via NRC.

“I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds did come. Should I go there? Now I wait everything. I haven’t heard from United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.”

The forward will be looking to rise to the occasion when the Dutch face Lionel Messi-led Argentina in the quarter-final on Saturday, December 9.

With Cristiano Ronaldo no longer at Old Trafford, their attacking department lacks depth. Multiple reports have indicated that the club will consider an audacious move in January.

Gakpo a perfect Ronaldo replacement?

Sports Brief earlier reported on why Gakpo replacing Ronaldo is perfect. The veteran striker left the English club last month following the explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Gakpo's performances for PSV and the Netherlands at the World Cup have seen United fans beg for the Red Devils for his signature in January.

His stats are incredible and many believe he will fit in perfectly at Old Trafford. In addition, he could also play on either flank, making him a versatile addition to the squad.
