Dumfries provided a brace of assists and scored a goal as the Dutch strolled into the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win.
During the post-match conference, the former Bayern Munich and Manchester United manager praised the wing-back for his brilliant performance.
In a video that has since gone viral on social media, van Gaal is seen giving a kiss to Dumfries in show of gratitude to the player.
