Among the players was Altay's goalkeeper Ozan Evrim Özenç. A Gotzepe fan invaded the pitch and ran towards the group of players.
The fan uprooted the corner flag as he went and viciously attacked Ozan from behind. The fan landed two heavy blows on Ozan's back before he was stopped in his tracks by security and other players.
Ozan lay on the floor with SportBible reporting that he had to be rushed to the hospital after suffering a four-centimetre head wound. It is still not clear why Ozan was specifically targeted.
The game was suspended immediately. A number of Gotzepe fan accounts have since called for stern action to be taken against the perpetrators of the incident.
