  • The Zenit St. Petersburg v Spartak Moscow clash on November 27 turned extremely chaotic
  • The brawl was instigated by an exchange of words by Quincy Promes and William Barros
  • The referee issued a total of six red cards before St. Petersburg went on to win the game

A referee in Russia was forced to send off six players, when a cup tie between Zenit St. Petersburg and Spartak Moscow turned into a massive brawl.

The incident happened in stoppage time and was triggered by Quincy Promes and William Barros. Referee Vladimir Moskalev tried to tone down the confrontation between the two players, but it was a tad too late.

Members of both teams' technical benches and players who were on the bench jumped on the pitch, exchanging blows and kicks. In a viral video, Moskalev is seen running helplessly trying to restore calm.

The referee's efforts were futile, but he ended up dishing out six red cards. All the red cards were given to players who were not playing at the time the melee broke out.

Surprisingly, as Daily Mail reports, Zenit's Rodrigo Praio kicked a player in front of the referee but survived the red card purge.

The game was tied at 0-0 at the time of the melee.

Once order was restored, the game resumed, with Zenit winning the game via a post-match penalty shootout to advance to the next round.

10 players carded in final

Sports Brief has previously reported that the Argentina Cup final became a spectacle, after 10 players were sent off by the centre referee, during the course of the game between Racing Club and Boca Juniors.

Racing were crowned champions of Argentina's champions trophy after they defeated Boca 2-1 in extra time, but referee Facundo Tello was the highlight of the show.

The game exploded to life in the fifth minute of stoppage time, with Sebastian Villa of Boca and Johan Carbonero of Racing both seeing red.

The home side had another six players sent off in the ensuing extra time period, after Racing midfielder Carlos Alcaraz sparked a melee in front of the Boca fans with his match-winning goal.
