  • Roy Keane has slammed Argentina, following the South American champions’ shock loss to Saudi Arabia in their opening World Cup game
  • The former Ireland captain blasted the lack of aggression from Lionel Scaloni’s team, especially Juventus winger Angel Di Maria
  • Argentina will now hope to bounce back in their next game against Mexico after witnessing their 36-game unbeaten run shattered

Roy Keane was disgusted at the way and manner in which Argentina was bullied into an opening day World Cup defeat, after Lionel Scaloni’s men were beaten 2-1 by Saudi Arabia.

The former Manchester United midfielder turned TV pundit tore into Argentina’s performance, stating they had lacked aggression for the entirety of the game.

According to Metro UK, Keane singled out Angel Di Maria in particular for his poor display, as he said the Juventus midfielder lacked composure and therefore couldn’t impact on the match.

“There is no aggression; there are bodies there, but you have to go and attack the ball. There is no composure; they have lost their heads. Look at Di Maria here! Di Maria, my God.”

Argentina will hope to turn their fortunes around when they next play Mexico on Saturday night, before their final group game against Poland.

Argentina has 3 goals disallowed

Meanwhile, Argentina could count themselves unlucky in their shock defeat to Saudi Arabia, after the South American champions had three goals ruled out by the referee, Daily Mirror reports.

A Lionel Messi strike and two goals from Lautaro Martinez were adjudged to be offside by the centre referee Slavko Vincic in the first half, before the second-half meltdown from La Albiceleste.

The Middle East minnows turned the game around in the second half, as goals from Salah Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari cancelling out Messi’s initial goal.

Messi speaks after Saudi defeat

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Lionel Messi said Argentina's shock loss to Saudi Arabia was a 'very heavy blow', but vowed the South American champions would bounce back from defeat.

Messi gave his side a 10th-minute lead from the penalty spot, but second-half goals from Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari helped the Saudis pull off one of the greatest shocks in World Cup history.

If not for three tight offside calls against the South Americans in the first half, the match could have ended entirely differently.
