  • Saudi Arabia made a big statement by ending La Albiceleste's 36-game unbeaten streak

In one of the most incredible matches in FIFA World Cup history, Saudi Arabia have defeated Argentina 2-1.

The Lusail Stadium in Qatar witnessed one of the most incredible moments of the Mundial so far, ending in a disaster for the South Americans.

La Albiceleste started the game on the front foot and then opened the scoring from the penalty spot, with Lionel Messi converted.

VAR had faulted a foul in the Saudi danger area, as the former world champions were handed a spot kick. Seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi stepped up and then sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Lautaro Martinez thought he had doubled Argentina's lead in 28th minute, but VAR ruled out his effort for offside.

Argentina failed to extend their lead despite having a number of chances in the first half, and they paid dearly for it after the restart.

Barely four minutes into the second half, Saleh Al-Shehri struck to draw Saudi Arabia level. Just five minutes later, Salem Al-Dawsari netted a screamer to send the entire Lusail Stadium into raptures.

Al-Dawsari was first onto the ball following another effort that was deflected out. He took a step to his right, which opened up a chunk of space to shoot into the top corner.

It then took a heroic defensive performance to see them home, as they weathered an Argentina barrage. It ended: Argentina 1 - 2 Saudi Arabia.

Argentina's 36-game unbeaten run ends

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that Saudi Arabia clawed back from a goal down to secure a famous 2-1 victory against Argentina.

The first major upset of the 2022 FIFA World Cup saw the Asian champions push ahead of La Albiceleste in the second half.

Saudi Arabia's heroics in the match ended the 36-match unbeaten run for Lionel Messi and his team, who have now been dealt a blow to their Mundial aspirations.
