In the second half, coach Peseiro decided to bring on Dennis with the thought of him strengthening his attack, but the Kwara Football Academy product was unable to make any impact.

Super Eagles got a penalty in the 65th minute and had the chance to come back into the game, bu Dennis lot it.

Captain of the Nigerian side William Troost-Ekong wanted to play the penalty, but Dennis refused to allow him to as he went ahead and missed it.

Nigerians were angry about Dennis missing the penalty as they believed that scoring the kick would have helped the side to come back into the game.

According to the video made by the NFF, Peseiro explained that it is not a new thing for a player to miss a penalty.

Statement made by Peseiro

''It is nothing for a player to miss a penalty and I won't blame Dennis for missing it against Portugal. He has my protection.''

Angry Nigerians attack Super Eagles

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Nigerians took to various social media platforms to lambast the Super Eagles following their embarrassing 4-0 loss to Portugal in an international friendly.

Even without captain Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese team ran riot and thoroughly sent a warning as they head to Qatar for the World Cup.

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes grabbed a brace in the encounter and then Goncalo Ramos and Joao Mario got a goal each in the second half.

It was a poor night for Nigeria as striker Emmanuel Dennis also missed a penalty as his tame effort was saved by Rui Patricio.

While the Portuguese head straight to Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria miss out on the global showpiece having conceded the ticket to Ghana.
