Legendary Black Stars forward Asamoah Gyan is urging Ghanaians to keep their reservations about the 26-man squad named for the World Cup and support the team.

Coach Otto Addo named his team for the tournament on Monday, leaving fans of the national team in shock following the absence of top performing players Joseph Painstil and Majeed Ashimeru.

Gyan himself took to social media to express surprise by the absence of the duo and Felix Afena-Gyan.

However, the former Black Stars captain is pleading with Ghanaians to support the team at the World Cup in Qatar.

"Everyone have shared his or her opinion about the BLACK STARS. 26 man squad is out now so what we have to do now is to support those in camp now. If u have any comments, wait till after the first game of the tournament. But for now, let’s pray for the team to deliver," he wrote on Twitter. Gyan will be missing the World Cup for the first time, having been inactive for over a year.

The 36-year-old remains the African with the most goals at the World Cup with six from three competitions.

The Black Stars will begin their tournament with a clash against Portugal on November 24.

Ghana hold first training

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the Black Stars of Ghana held their first training session ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Monday, as days count down to the tournament.

Twenty-three players, including home-based duo Danlad Ibrahim and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, were present at practice.

The rest of the players - namely Alexander Djiku, Joseph Aidoo and Kamaldeen Sulemana - are expected to join the team in UAE on Tuesday.

According to GHANASoccernet, Joseph Paintsil, Majeed Ashimeru and Felix Afena-Gyan have all been dropped by coach Otto Addo ahead of the announcement of his final squad.
