The tactician is married to Clare, who has often remained out of the limelight. John Herdman's wife gave birth to two children, Jay and Lilly-May Herdman. Jay, born in New Zealand on 14 August 2004, is an attacking football midfielder playing for Vancouver 2 in the MLS NEXT Pro (USA's third-tier league).

Jay previously played for Hibiscus Coast and Surrey United, SC. He has also played for Canada and New Zealand at the youth level. Despite being eligible to play for England, the young talent has always preferred to play for New Zealand.
