- Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu met in the 3rd/4th play-off penalty shoot-out in the Carling Black Label Cup
History has just been made.
During the Carling Black Cup, Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu met in the first match of its kind where it went straight into a penalty shoot-out without a full game before this tie-breaker. The match was to settle the third-and-fourth place play-off.
Chiefs opened the scoring Nkosingiphile Ngcobo slotted past AmaZulu Veli Mothwa with the first spot-kick. Lehlohonolo Majoro levelled matters with a great shot past Bruce Bvuma.
Zitha Kwinika's penalty was saved by Mothwa, captain Makhehlene Makhaula put Usuthu into a 2-1 lead. Reeve Frosler pulled Chiefs level to make it 2-2 with his penalty before Ethan Brooks' powerful penalty was saved smartly by Bvuma. Ironically, Bvuma then sent Mothwa the wrong way to make it 3-2 to the Amakhosi.

A rattled Larry Bwalya skied his shot after a bit of gamesmanship from Bvuma, before Wandile Duba, sank his penalty to give Chiefs the 4-2 victory. Coincidentally, Chiefs had lost their earlier semifinal against Orlando Pirates 5-6 on penalties barely an hour earlier after the Soweto Derby had ended 0-0.
It was something of a revenge encounter for Chiefs, as they had been knocked out of the MTN8 a few weeks ago on goal difference in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Pirates were preparing for their final against a red-hot Mamelodi Sundowns, which had thumped Usuthu 3-0 in the earlier semifinal.
This will also be a rematch, with the Buccaneers having dumped out the Brazilians from the semifinals of the MTN8 with a 3-0 aggregate victory.
