  • Gareth Southgate has blamed Tammy Abraham’s omission from the England World Cup squad on his poor scoring form
  • Abraham was among the big names to miss out on a place in the Three Lions squad as Southgate went for Callum Wilson
  • Roma star Abraham only recently got back to scoring ways for Jose Mourinho’s side and that played a factor in his omission

England boss Gareth Southgate has come out to admit Tammy Abraham’s 'poor run of scoring' cost him a place in the Three Lions’ World Cup squad.

Southgate named his 26-man squad for the upcoming global spectacle, naming Newcastle man Callum Wilson to deputise Harry Kane in the striking position.

Wilson has netted six goals and provided two assists in the Premier League so far this season, something which Southgate said played a factor in his decision to select him.

Tammy Abraham had initially put himself in a firm position for selection, after scoring an impressive 27 goals in his debut campaign in Italy last season.

But his form seems to have taken a massive dip, and he has only managed to find the net four times in 19 games so far this term across all competitions.

While commenting on his reasons for leaving out Abraham, Southgate said as per TalkSport:

“Tammy’s had a poor run of scoring form at the wrong time, really. And it’s not a case of that we are three or four weeks away from a final and the start of the first match. We are now ten days away, so form couldn't be more important."

Here is the full list of England attackers going to the World Cup:

James Maddison (Leicester), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Tottenham), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Chelsea), Callum Wilson (Newcastle), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United).

Southgate on Maguire selection

Sports Brief also earlier reported on why Southgate chose Harry Maguire and Eric Dier, at the expense of the in-form Fikayo Tomori.

This comes amid an online outrage from fans, who remain adamant Southgate made a mistake in leaving out some superstars. Dier in particular has come under fire in recent weeks, for making high profile mistakes for his club Tottenham Hotspur.

Southgate reasoned that veteran England defenders had too much experience to be replaced by talented but younger players.
