  • Lionel Messia and Cristiano Ronaldo are both looking to win the World Cup to cement their claims as the greatest of all time
  • Luka Modric is still playing amazing football, and Croatia's national team coach believes he can play for more years to come
  • Luis Suarez enters what could be his final World Cup knowing that he will have to face Ghana again, a team seeking revenge

All eyes will be on the FIFA World Cup this year, as the global showpiece gets underway in Qatar on November 20.

While the World Cup attracts attention for a variety of reasons, this year’s edition is bound to turn heads due to the number of big-name stars who could be playing their last international tournament.

Sports Brief looks at 10 players who could be calling an end to their careers after the final whistle is blown in Qatar.

Lionel Messi (35) and Cristiano Ronaldo (37) are undoubtedly the biggest names who will hang up their boots in international football at the end of the tournament.

The duo have always been in a battle to be considered the greatest of all time, and a World Cup title will be the ultimate bragging right.

Both have tasted continental success though. Ronaldo’s Portugal have won the European Championship and Messi’s Argentina have won COPA America, The Washington Post reported.

30-year-old Neymar goes into the tournament hoping to lead the South American giants back to former glory. He’s not the only Brazilian who could call Qatar their last.

At 38, Thiago Silva is unlikely to feature again, as is fellow South American Luis Suarez, who is 35 already. Suarez will go into his last tournament knowing that he has to face Ghana again. The Uruguayan had a big ‘hand’ in Ghana’s elimination in the 2010 event in South Africa.

In Europe, the likes of Karim Benzema (34), Robert Lewandowski (34), Thomas Müller (33), Gareth Bale (33) and Luka Modric (37) could all kick their final ball for their countries.

As reported by FarPost however, Croatian coach Zlatko Dalic was confident that Modric wouldn’t retire from international football anytime soon.

"Luka is playing amazing football and he can continue doing so,” said Dalic.
