  • Javier Tebas hopes that rumours of Lionel Messi's eventual return to Barcelona become a reality after spending two seasons away from the league
  • Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 after Barcelona failed to renew his contract, following the Catalan giant’s poor financial status
  • Messi is under contract with PSG until June 2023 and has an option to extend it for a further year, although Barcelona wants to re-sign him

La Liga president, Javier Tebas is rooting for Lionel Messi to return to the Spanish top flight again after reports emanated of Barcelona’s interest to re-sign the Argentina forward.

Messi dumped La Liga last summer for the French Ligue 1, after Barcelona failed to renew his contract at Camp Nou amid the club’s financial crisis.

However, Tebas has now insisted it will in everyone’s best interest if Messi were to return to La Liga, revealing the Argentine leaving Barcelona initially was a mistake, ESPN reports.

"I don't know if Messi will have one last show at Barca, that will depend on him. Hopefully, he will come back. Above all, it would also be good for him to return to Spanish football, especially to the team that was the side that saw him grow."

Tebas said that in his opinion, it was a mistake for Messi to break the 'marriage' between himself and the Blaugrana, describing their partnership as a beneficial, long-term alliance between the two.

Messi won 35 titles, including four Champions League trophies, in his 17 seasons at Barcelona.

Lionel Messi has three options

Meanwhile, football journalist Julien Laurens says Lionel Messi has three options in the summer of where he could potentially be playing, as he continues to be linked with Barcelona, Sky Sports reports.

Barcelona are reportedly keen on bringing back the Argentine to Camp Nou while Major League Soccer side, Inter Miami are also interested in signing the 35-year-old forward.

Messi, who signed a 2-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain last year, still has the option to extend his deal with the Parisians for one extra year - and Laurens says staying in Europe is key for Messi.

Messi blanking calls from Barcelona

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Lionel Messi has reportedly been snubbing phone calls from Barcelona, as speculation over his future intensifies.

The 35-year-old has one year left on his Paris Saint-Germain contract and could leave the Parisians as a free agent, having signed a two-year contract upon his departure from Catalonia in 2021.

The little magician is currently on the radar of MLS club Inter Miami, who are set to rival Barcelona and PSG for the signature of the 7-time Ballon d’Or winner.
