Belgium Manager Roberto Martinez with Interesting Theory Why Lukaku Struggles at Club Level

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has come up with an interesting theory on why Romelu Lukaku tends to struggle at club level.

After leaving Manchester United in 2019, Lukaku has experienced mixed fortunes as a player.

He initially joined Inter Milan and after two stellar campaigns where he scored 64 goals in 95 games, Chelsea decided to re-sign the striker for a whopping £97.5million.

However, despite the hype surrounding his Stamford Bridge return, Lukaku’s second spell as anything but a fairytale.

A combination of injuries and manager Thomas Tuchel tweaking his tactics meant Lukaku struggled to fit into the team.

Then came the infamous interview in December 2021 where the 29-year-old openly expressed his discontent at Chelsea and desire to rejoin Inter.

After ending the campaign with 15 goals in 44 appearances, he eventually made a return to Inter, but is yet to hit the heights of 2020 and 2021.

Martinez spoke on TalkSport where he claimed Lukaku might be a victim of his own versatility sometimes.

“You rely a lot on how you are used. It’s not the same using your qualities when you are a possession team, or you play on the counter attack.” He analyzed.

“Rom is a player who can play in many different profiles. He’s a no.9, he can run in behind, and probably he’s a victim, sometimes, of his versatility and the way he is used at club level.

The Belgium coach, who also coached Lukaku at Everton, says the striker is a more settled figure with the national team.

Lukaku recently returned to the Inter squad after a spell on the sidelines and bagged a goal as Inter saw off Viktoria Plzen 4-0 in the Champions League.
