While Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid suffered heartbreak in their Champions League on Wednesday night, his son Giovanni Simeone was breaking records for Napoli in the competition.

The young striker has followed in his father's footsteps to add a little piece of history to his career, equaling his father's record in the process.

Giovanni is the oldest son of the Atletico Madrid boss and has been grabbing the headlines this year with Hellas Verona and Napoli. The 27-year-old has had quite a career so far, according to the Daily Mail.

The striker has already played for eight clubs and scored 93 career goals after spells in Italy and Argentina, according to Transfermarkt.

Simeone Junior equals Simeone Senior

On Wednesday, October 26, during Napoli's Champions League encounter with Rangers, Simeone scored twice for Luciano Spalletti's side.

His two goals took his tally in Europe to four goals and in the process, equalled his father's record to become the second Argentinian to score four goals in their first four Champions League matches, according to Football Italia.

Simeone Senior did it in only two games for Atletico Madrid in September 1996, scoring twice against both Steaua Bucharest and Widzew Lodz.

This means that the Simeone family are only the second father-son duo to score a Champions League brace. Juventus forward Federico Chiesa and his dad Enrico Chiesa have also achieved this feat.

Giovanni scores brace for Napoli

Sports Brief earlier reported on Giovanni Simeone scoring a brace for Napoli against Rangers in the Champions League, helping his side remain top of the group.

Wednesday's match was only Simeone's second start of the season, and the competition continues to be stiff with Victor Osimhen and Giacomo Raspadori in the mix.

Napoli have now won 12 straight matches in all competitions this season.
