Barcelona will now play in the Europa League for the second consecutive season after their fate in the Champions League was sealed with Inter Milan’s 4-0 win over Viktoria Plzen.

The Catalans had needed Inter Milan to drop points while they win against Bayern Munich to keep any slim hope of retaining their Champions League ambitions alive.

Xavi gives verdict on Bayern Munich’s defeat

Meanwhile, Xavi has described Barcelona’s defeat to Bayern Munich as a low blow after the Catalans were thrashed 3-0 at Camp Nou by the Bavarians, SB Nation reports.

Barca’s Champions League journey came to a halt at the group stages for the second consecutive season following the defeat to the Bundesliga giants.

Goals from Sadio Mane, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, and Benjamin Pavard ensured Bayern Munich continued their dominance against Barcelona as the Bavarian secured the top spot in Group C.

Eliminated Barca fail to salvage pride

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Bayern Munich clinched top spot in Champions League Group C with a 3-0 win over eliminated Barcelona, after the Catalans' fate had been decided before kick-off at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Inter Milan thrashed Viktoria Plzen 4-0 earlier on to guarantee progression to the last 16 and send Barca crashing out in the first round for a second successive season.

The Catalans, who drop into the Europa League, had reached the knock-out rounds in the 17 prior editions of the tournament before consecutive early eliminations under coach Xavi Hernandez.
