  • Riyad Mahrez has been stripped of the responsibility of taking penalties for Manchester City
  • Pep Guardiola made the decision after the winger missed a vital penalty during City's clash with Dortmund
  • Mahrez also missed another penalty during his side's Champions League meeting with Copenhagen last week
  • Summer signing Erling Haaland has been backed to assume the role going forward

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed he is giving Riyad Mahrez a break from taking the club's penalties.

Guardiola's drastic move comes after the Algerian winger missed a spot kick during their Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.

With the scores still 0-0, Mahrez won a penalty for the English giants, which he stepped up to take.

However, the former Leicester City star was unable to convert the target, with Gregor Kobel, who was in goal for Dortmund, making an easy save from Mahrez's poor effort.

The penalty miss was Man City's 25th from the 80 they have won since Guardiola took charge of the club.

According to Metro UK, City's penalty misses under Guardiola are the most by any Premier League side during the period.

Guardiola axes Mahrez as City's penalty-taker

The worrying record has now forced Guardiola to axe Mahrez as the club's penalty taker, with the Spaniard announcing the winger, will be taking a break.

"Riyad was exceptional two or three years ago, he shoot the pen to go 1-1 here to help us reach the semi for the first time," Pep said.
"Lately, he missed. He will reflect. He can take a break now with the penalties," he added.

While it remains unclear who will be handed the role, it is almost obvious City's goal machine Erling Haaland will be allowed to have the responsibility.

Guardiola slammed for taking off Haaland

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on fans’ reaction to Erling Haaland's substitution on Tuesday night, October 25.

Many of the fans had no idea Haaland was suffering from a knock at the time, and they took to social media to express their discontent, especially after Riyad Mahrez missed the penalty.

Haaland is well on course to break a stunning record in the Premier League this season.
