  • Harry Maguire is expected to return to Manchester United's starting XI after the injury to Raphael Varane
  • The French defender injured his hamstring and is set to be sidelined for a few weeks, according to multiple reports
  • Maguire has started just three times for United this season and has been heavily criticised for most of the year due to poor form

Raphael Varane's injury against Chelsea was a sad sight for most fans since the Frenchman was developing a good relationship with Lisandro Martinez.

However, the news is a blessing in disguise for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire who is set to return to full training this week after missing the last few weeks through injury.

The England centre-back has been heavily criticised this year, and with the team's producing one of the worst seasons in the club's history, Maguire became the scapegoat, according to Goal.

His performance against Germany in the last international break saw the defender dismissed, urging the club to sell him.

Maguire to return United's team

With Varane out for a few weeks with an alleged hamstring injury, Maguire is in line to return to the starting eleven for United this week if he passes a fitness test, according to the Sun.

The 29-year-old's fitness couldn't come at a better time as the 2022 World Cup is approaching.

England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed that Maguire is an important player for the national team setup, and he would've liked it if he played for his club, according to Sky Sports.

With Varane set to start his recovery process, Maguire could be set for an extended run in the team. The former Leicester City man was dropped after United’s first two games of the season and has only started one game since, the Europa league match against Real Sociedad.

Southgate supports Maguire

Sports Brief earlier reported on Gareth Southgate expressing his support to Maguire despite being confined to the bench at his club.

Southgate fully believes in him and will still be at the heart of Qatar's Three Lions’ defence.

Last month, the England boss publicly came out with a fierce backing of his centre-back, saying:

“Why do we pick him? Because he’s one of the players who gives us the best chance of winning.”
