  • Man City's hopes of replicating Arsenal's heroics of finishing a season without a defeat were shattered on Sunday
  • City, who were yet to lose a single match so far this term, were humbled 1-0 by a resurgent Liverpool side at Anfield
  • The Citizens' heartbreaking defeat leaves Arsenal's 18-year perfect record of finishing the season without a loss intact

Arsenal fans could hardly hide their joy following Manchester City's 1-0 surprise defeat against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, October 16.

City's defeat saw the Gunners take a commanding lead at the top of the Premier League standings, with Mikel Arteta's charges now enjoying a four-point lead over the reigning champions.

However, there was more to the Citizen's loss than just handing the north Londoners a slight advantage in the title race.

The north Londoners remain the only side to finish a season without suffering a defeat, with City's hopes of breaking the record suffering a blow after 10 rounds of matches.

The reigning English champions were the only team yet to suffer a loss this season prior to their trip to Anfield.

However, Mohamed Salah's stunner in the 76th minute of the clash ended that unbeaten run, much to the joy of Arsenal fans.

Fans react after Citizens' loss

One exclaimed on Twitter:

“Still the only team to go a season unbeaten. The Invincibles.”

Another posted:

"Invincibles Day falling while Arsenal are top of the league. This is football heritage.”

A third declared:

“Happy Invincibles day to every Arsenal fan around the world.”

While a fourth added:

“Arsenal remain Invincibles. This is why they hate us.”

Meanwhile, on their part, Arsenal have lost only once so far this season, with the defeat coming during their trip to Man United in September.

They have since maintained a winning run, with many touting them as favourites to challenge Man City for the Premier League crown.

Legend backs Arsenal for EPL

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on former midfielder for Chelsea and Liverpool, Joe Cole admitting Arsenal are the favourites to win the Premier League this season.

Cole called himself a believer in the Gunners hoisting the title, adding that the processes talked about by Mikel Arteta were starting to bear fruit.

"It looks like a well-oiled machine. Exciting times for Arsenal fans," the three-time Premier League winner added.
