  • Luka Modric gave credence to the popular cliche 'age is just a number', when he left the football ecosystem purring over his masterclass performance in El Clasico
  • Modric's brilliance in the heart of Real Madrid's midfield ensured Los Blancos secured bragging rights and most importantly, the three points against Barcelona
  • Despite not getting on the scoresheet, his performance inspired Madrid to continue their unbeaten run this term while ending Barca's run of not tasting La Liga defeat

Mercurial Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric rolled back the hands of time to put in a virtuoso performance, as Los Blancos continued their unbeaten start to the season.

Modric put on a masterclass performance for the umpteenth time in a Real Madrid shirt, to inspire his side to a 3-1 victory over FC Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday, October 16.

A goal from talisman and Ballon d'Or favourite Karim Benzema, a score by Federico Valverde, and a last-gasp penalty from Rodrygo rendered Ferran Torres' strike a consolation in the first instalment of El Clasico.

The 37-year-old ex-Ballon d'Or winner faced highly-rated Spanish midfielder Pedri in a 1-on-1 duel, which saw the former coming out on top.

With Pedri bearing down on Modric, the Croat calmly lobbed the ball over the Barcelona midfielder to leave Pedri on the grass. He could only watch the Madrid man glide past him after their duel, as noted by ESPN.

Pedri was not the only player across the El Clasico divide to bear the brunt of Modric's brilliance. Busquets and the rest of the Barcelona team experienced his depth of skill first-hand.

El Clasico win for Real Madrid

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that reigning champions Real Madrid beat Barcelona 3-1 in El Clasico to overtake their fierce rivals at the top of La Liga on Sunday.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring in the 12th minute by converting a rebound after Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved from Vinicius Junior, with Fede Valverde drilling home the second from the edge of the box before the break.

Ferran Torres pulled one back for Barcelona in the final stages after good work by Ansu Fati, but Rodrygo won and converted a late penalty to ensure Carlo Ancelotti's side inflicted Barcelona's first domestic defeat of the season.
