NBAHarry Maguire: Gareth Southgate’s Stance on Embattled Defender As World Cup Draws Closer
- Harry Maguire has the full backing of England boss Gareth Southgate ahead of the upcoming World Cup
- The England captain remains an integral part of Southgate’s squad, despite getting relegated to the bench at Manchester United
- Maguire was given permission to go on holiday by Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag to ‘clear his head’
England defender Harry Maguire is set to still play a crucial part in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup side, despite lacking game time at Manchester United in recent weeks.
The 29-year old has troubles at club level and has been demoted to the bench in recent weeks by Erik ten Hag, who prefers the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane as the centre-backs in the Premier League.
This has left Maguire isolated on the bench, as he continues to recover from a knock he sustained during England’s last international break.
Players who do not get enough game time at club level usually run the risk of getting overlooked for the national team, but this might not be the case with Maguire.

The Mirror reports that despite his club woes, Southgate has full faith in him and he will still be at the heart of the Three Lions’ defence in Qatar.
Last month, the England boss publicly came out with a fierce backing of his centre-back, saying:
“Why do we pick him? Because he’s one of the players who gives us the best chance of winning.”
The central defence area is one of particular concern for Southgate, with Man City star John Stones also recovering from a hamstring issue.
Overall, England also face a real test to rediscover their form despite their star-studded World Cup squad.

Tuchel interested in England job
Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Thomas Tuchel’s potential interest in the England job, weeks after receiving the sack by Chelsea.
According to established BILD German journalist Christian Falk, Tuchel - who recently turned down a job offer by Bayern Leverkusen - would take the chance to become manager of the Three Lions if the position opens up.
This would mean possibly replacing Gareth Southgate, who has come under increasing pressure in recent months.
However, Tuchel would have to contend with competition from several top managers in his bid to manage England.
