  • Gabriel Jesus brought with him a new celebration style to the Premier League when he joined Manchester City in 2017
  • The celebration, which resembles someone making a phone call, is a tribute to his mother who played a huge part in his football career
  • The striker has made a splendid start at Arsenal, save for being snubbed by Brazil's head coach for the last warm-up matches ahead of the World Cup

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus invented his own method of celebration when he came over to the Premier League in 2017 from Palmeiras.

Then with Manchester City, the striker would place his hands on his ears as if he was making or receiving a phone call as he scurried away in celebration once he scored a goal.

The style became synonymous with him and he hasn't stopped using it five years later at Arsenal. After winning four Premier League titles in Manchester, he switched over to London to join Mikel Arteta following City's acquisition of Erling Haaland.

In an interview with the Players Tribune in 2017, Jesus revealed that the celebration was always a tribute to his mother. Jesus' mother played an integral part in raising him and his siblings as a single parent.

His mother was determined to keep him in between school and following his football career.

Whenever I score for Manchester City, my mother calls me. The phone rings as soon as the ball hits the back of the net.
It doesn't matter if she's back home in Brazil or if she's in the stadium watching me. She calls me every time. So I run to the corner flag, put my hand to my ear, and say, "Alo Mae!"

Jesus has started life in the London capital in scintillating fashion after grabbing four goals and three assists in the opening seven games of the season. Arsenal are currently on top of the Premier League standings.

Explaining what Erling Haaland's celebrations mean

Sports Brief had earlier reported that apart from his lethal nature in front of goal, Erling Haaland has also captured the world's attention with his celebration styles.

So famous and unique have his celebrations been that one of them has been incorporated into the famous video game by EA Sports, FIFA.

But what do these celebrations mean for the Norwegian striker? Does he just do them for the sake of it, or do they have a meaning like Lionel Messi's fingers pointing to the sky celebration?
