  • South Africa's senior men's national football and rugby teams both played on Saturday afternoon
  • Tellingly a sparse crowd showed up for Bafana Bafana's victory over Sierre Leone at Soccer City, while a full house witnessed the Springboks defeat Argentina at Kings Park Stadium
  • This led to a straightforward debate about the reason why there was such a difference in the popularity of the two teams

An awkward photo is making the rounds on social media and is causing a stir.

The image shows the difference in attendance at Soccer City in Johannesburg and Kings Park Stadium in Durban for a Bafana Bafana and Springbok match. A sparse crowd watched Bafana defeating Sierre Leone 4-0 in the 95 000-seater, while the 52-000 seater was filled to capacity as the Boks overran Argentina 38-21.

"Writing Bafana Bafana and Bokke in the same sentence is disrespectful to the Boks. Respect- Respect... in Mourinho's tone of voice..."

Jean-Jacques Rosseau said:

"World Class team vs Minnows of Africa … no comparison."

Mantshonga Mncadi said:

"A clear example of what happens when people feel they are not taken seriously and appreciated. The Boks know that they need to perform for the fans, and they never disappoint."

Trevor Ndlela said:

"Can't compare the two Springboks are World Champions while Bafana Bafana are number 100 in the world."

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos admits Themba Zwane mistake

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos showed that he can eat humble pie.

He showered praise on midfielder Themba Zwane for his performance as the national squad overran Sierre Leone 4-0 at Soccer City in Johannesburg yesterday, including scoring twice in the rout, Sports Brief reported.

The Belgian said:

“But you know with my philosophy, it is youngsters first and then we will see. But again everyone has to appreciate that I changed my mind. This is not easy for a coach when for four months he says ‘no, no, no’ and then suddenly (changes his mind)… But okay, I am not afraid to do that and Themba shows today he deserves his position in the team.”
