Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has disclosed he deliberately made mistakes in games last season in order to get the crowd charged.

The 29-year-old was a key figure in Chelsea's backline under Thomas Tuchel, and produced a number of masterclass performances as the Blues advanced to two domestic cup finals.

While the Stamford Bridge outfit ended up short in both finals against Liverpool, the defence can certainly be praised as they kept clean sheets against Jurgen Klopp's side in 180 minutes of football.

He told Sport1, cited by the Sun:

"I'll be honest: I deliberately made a few mistakes because it was just too quiet in the stadium for me during this game.
"I wanted to wake people up with it."

The game in question was Chelsea's 1-0 victory over Newcastle in March.

The fixture was just after the Blues were sanctioned while under the ownership of Russian business tycoon Roman Abramovich.

It could be that the sanction created a sombre atmosphere around Stamford Bridge at the time.

Per the official Premier League website, Rudiger committed two errors that directly led to goals against Chelsea.
