Leipzig were 2-0 down at halftime, and despite a late goal from Willi Orbán, they still lost the game 2-1.

Things could have been different if Leipzig were given a penalty in the 12th minute when Werner was brought down in the box. Union Berlin captain Christopher Trimmel made contact with Werner’s legs in the box, but the referee didn’t point to the spot, and neither did VAR intervene.

Werner believes that the decision impacted the game immensely as Leipzig could have been 1-0 up, Bulinews reported.

“I thought it was a penalty. I clearly felt the contact. Anyone sitting in front of a screen could have decided on a penalty,” he said.

Werner added that it was difficult for referees to make a decision on the pitch, so VAR needed to be more supportive.

Leipzig coach Dominic Tedesco also touched on the incident, saying that it would have 1-0 to them then. Match official Deniz Aytekin also discussed the matter following the game and said that it was a difficult situation.

He also added that VAR reviewed the decision but found no clear and obvious error to overturn it.

Timo Werner remains optimistic about RB Leipzig’s chances of challenging Bayern Munich for Bundesliga title

Timo Werner is still optimistic about RB Leipzig’s chances in the Bundesliga this season.

Leipzig won the DFB Pokal earlier this year and are expected to challenge Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table.

However, despite the promise of a title challenge this season, Leipzig drew their first two games.
