If you’ve watched Karim Benzema play in the past three years, it’s hard not to notice his bandaged right hand during games.
The iconic bandaged hand has become synonymous with the player and takes centre stage during his fist pump goal celebration.
Benzema’s bandages have become so iconic that it even features in the FIFA video games as well. While many have seen the striker’s hand bandaged during the game, not many know the actual reason.
The answer is no; Benzema’s bandages are not a good luck charm or some form of superstition. Even though Benzema is in red hot form and on course to win the Ballon d’Or, his talent on the field is all-natural. His goal against Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Super Cup final made him Real Madrid's second highest scorer of all time, Goal reported. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more goals than him.

Sporting News reported that the bandages are there for medical reasons. In 2019, Benzema broke the pinky finger on his right hand during a game against Real Betis. The French striker required surgery to fix his finger, but the operation and rehab would have sidelined him for two months. Benzema opted against surgery and returned to playing for Madrid.
During the 2021/22 season, Benzema confirmed that he did have surgery but didn’t take time off to rehab his finger. Unfortunately, he injured it again. The striker doesn’t want to miss two months of football and has since declined to undergo surgery again. As a result, he plays with the bandages to protect his finger from further harm.
