Newcastle United's fullback Kieran Trippier has come out to explain why he turned down efforts from Manchester United to sign him during the January transfer window.

Trippier was looking to move away from Atletico Madrid and make a return back to England. Manchester United, then under interim manager Ralf Rangnick had set their eyes on signing the England international.

The versatile defender said that United expressed interest but opted to join the Magpies after having a conversation with the head coach Eddie Howe.

Howe coached Trippier during their days at Burnley and he used that personal friendship to convince him to join him at St.James Park, as reported by Metro UK.

The Newcastle deal happened really quickly. The manager wo took over, I knew him very well. It was a good decision. This place is a football city and people are obsessed with their club.

The 31-year-old won the La Liga title with Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone. He became an instant success for Newcastle scoring a couple of goals before he suffered a knee injury.

Manchester United are now interested in signing either Denzel Dumfries or Achraf Hakimi

Sports Brief had earlier reported that United is still in the market for a fullback. It is believed that Erik ten hag will try to look into Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries and Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi.

Manchester United are understood to have reignited their interest in signing Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan. United were linked with the full-back in the early stages of the transfer window, but those rumours quietened down.

Another surprise name in the form of Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi has also popped up. United boss Erik ten Hag is quickly settling into his new role and is seeking to build a competitive side for the upcoming season.
