  • Pogba has been diagnosed with a lesion of the lateral meniscus in his right knee
  • The Frenchman has only featured once for Juve since his return and is set for some time on the sidelines
  • Reports claim there are two approaches to his injury, and no guarantees on whether he will make the World Cup which is four months away

Paul Pogba will have to receive treatment from a specialist for his knee injury, but there are fears he could miss the Qatar spectacle later in the year.

The 29-year-old’s right knee was diagnosed with the lesion of the lateral meniscus after he suffered a sprain during training in Los Angeles last week.

Initially, it was expected that Pogba would have surgery in the US, but he instead opted to fly back to Italy on Wednesday, July 27.

Football Italia now reports that Pogba’s return to Italy is because there are two possible approaches to tackling his injury.

One of the approaches could see the former Manchester United midfielder miss out on the World Cup, set to kick off in less than four months.

The first option would see doctors remove a piece of the meniscus, and this would see Pogba be out of action for a maximum of two months.

This approach is however not recommended, as it usually is more effective on younger players, since the mobility of the knee will be affected.

Option number two is to suture the lesion, but this could see Pogba be out for four to five months, meaning he would effectively miss the World Cup, set to take place in November and December.

What’s the way forward?

At the moment, Pogba has not made a decision on how to handle his knee issue, but he will consult with the France medical staff as well as an orthopaedic specialist before coming to a final decision.

Di Maria gets wiped by referee in Juventus debut

Elsewhere, Angel Di Maria had a debut to forget for Juventus as he collided with the referee in a bizarre accident.

The incident took place during Juventus’ routine 2-0 win over Guadalajara as Paul Pogba also featured.

After the collision, both men ended up on the turf, but Di Maria came off worse as it looked like the ref’s arm inadvertently caught him.
