The 65-year-old deployed Antonio Rudiger at his natural position of centre-back.

The gaffer explained his reasoning and also confirmed that Ferland Mendy remains the starting left-back when all options are available.

"Mendy is our starting left-back, but if he has problems, Alaba can take his place."

Meanwhile, Germany international Antonio Rudiger could end up on the bench at Real Madrid after joining the Spanish champions from Chelsea on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old signed a four-year deal in the summer transfer market, becoming the 10th German player to don the famous white jersey.

Carlo Ancelotti Reveals Why Antonio Rudiger Played at Left Back in El Clasico

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Germany international Antonio Rudiger made his unofficial Real Madrid debut in their 1-0 loss to Barcelona in Las Vegas on Sunday morning.

Raphinha netted the only goal of the match in the 27th minute after he intercepted a wayward pass from Real's Eder Militao to secure the win in a match in which Robert Lewandowski made his debut for Barca.

The El Clasico was Madrid’s first of three pre-season fixtures in the United States of America.
