  • The stakes ahead of the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and South Africa on Saturday have been raised
  • There have been allegations that the hosts are playing mind games with Banyana Banyana
  • However, reports out of the camp hold that this has not upset the favourites in the least

If reports are to be believed, Morocco is starting to feel the heat as the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations final against South Africa draws nearer.

According to a report, the hosts have started a dirty tricks campaign against their opponents to gain a psychological advantage.

The Daily Sun alleged that coach Desiree Ellis and her charges had to deal with grounds staff at the Stade Prince Moulay in Rabat - the venue of the final - turned on the sprinklers just as they were about to take to the field to begin practising. This forced the team to change their plans, moving on to prepare at the Mohamed V Academy nearby.

The article suggests that there was nothing accidental about this incident, as it could easily be interpreted as a cheesy attempt to disrupt the visitors' plans, unsettling them mentally.

A source told the publication:

"We were all surprised when the sprinklers were turned on as they knew the team was still training. Look, the Moroccans are aware that Banyana are a very strong team capable of beating them, and that's why they are doing all these tricks to destabilise our preparations."

The match between the Atlas Lionesses and Banyana Banyana is significant, as a new winner of the WAFCON will be crowned. Only Nigeria (11 titles) and Equatorial Guinea (two titles) have won the tournament since it began in 1991.
