FootballCAF Super League Could Cause Problems Says Former Bafana Bafana Captain Neil Tovey
- The much-anticipated CAF Super League set for commencement in 2023 has not completely won over everybody
- 1996 Africa Cup of Nations-winning Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey is worried that it will cause a fixture congestion
- This is on the back of the recent CAF Confederations Cup campaign pushing the DStv Premiership past its schedule
The CAF Super League could prove troublesome in terms of fixture congestions for teams involved in the competition.
This is the opinion of former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs defender and captain Neil Tovey.
According to KingFut, the tournament was created to increase the level of competition in African club football while also increasing the participants' revenue. Importantly, teams wishing to enter the Super League will need to have an academy and women’s team.
However, an unconvinced Tovey told Kick Off:

"First of all, I don't know if it will work. A couple of months ago there were a lot of problems when the teams tried to form a super league in Europe. "You still got to have your local leagues, you can't have your local leagues affected by a Super League.
"I mean, the big teams in your local league need to be playing local league football. I don't know how they are thinking of doing it but every weekend? I don't know what is going to happen. Because there is a hell of a lot travelling in Africa. Travelling in Africa is a lot different from travelling in Europe."
Orlando Pirates' DStv Premiership season was extended inconveniently by an extra two weeks after the club went all the way to the 2022 CAF Confederations Cup final. As of yet, the continent's football governing body is yet to reveal the format of the competition set to begin in 2023.

Confederation of African Football(CAF) President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has confirmed that the African Super League will begin in August next year.
As reported by Sports Brief, the Super League will be launched officially next month in Arusha, Tanzania during CAF's 44th General Assembly.
The Super League is expected to be a preserve of top teams in the continent. Official details will be released during the launch next month but Motsepe has in the past argued that the new competition will plough money back into African football.
