Zambia qualify for World Cup after beating Senegal in tough AWCON quarterfinal battle

Zambia female national senior team have qualified for the coming World Cup after beating Senegal 4-2 on penalties in the quarterfinal of the 2022 African Women Cup of Nations.

Going into this quarterfinal encounter, Zambia and Senegal players knew that World Cup ticket was on ground and they both fired in all cylinders on the pitch.

The Zambia women started the encounter impressively and they would have even taken the lead in the 9th minute, but Senegalese goalie was superb in her department.

First half of this quarterfinal battle ended goalless as both teams failed to find the back of the net.

Who scored the first goal in the second half?

Senegalese players changed their style of play in the second half and waited until the 61st minute before scoring their goal through Nguenar Ndiaye.

But nine minutes later, Zambia restored parity through Avell Chitundu and the end of the second half ended 1-1.

After both nations failed to also score in the extra time, the match went into penalties and Zambia triumphed 4-2.

Nigeria did not start their campaign in this competition on a brighter note as they lost their first game against South Africa in what was a painful defeat.

Many Nigerian football fans were livid with the defeat against South Africa, and to make matter worse for the team, striker Asisat Oshoala suffered an injury and has been ruled out of the competition.

They bounced back winning their next two games against Botswana and Burundi in convincing fashion.
